Nightlife

  • Fusion of Salsa and tribal African

Santa Maria is not much of a party town, however there are still plenty of good bars in which there is a cool scene.

If you are staying on the east side of the town, start with a sundowner from the bar at the Sab Sab hotel behind the Angulo centre (you can bring your drinks down to the centre - or even buy your own at the market and bring them to the centre). We also serve soft drinks and great coffee at the centre until 6pm so you can come and chill with us and watch the sun go down.

Out & about, try a caipirina (“kype-i-reen-ya”)– the local drink made from fresh lime juice, sugar and grogue (a spirit distilled from sugarcane, similar to cachaca or rum). Usually costs around $250.

Grogue on its own can be a little rough – definitely an acquired taste! Ponche – literally a ‘punch’ – is made by adding honey and fruit and is much more palatable although still pretty strong.

The main beer is Sagres (pronounced ‘Sagresh’), either bottled or on tap. Bottles should be around $150 at most bars and restaurants.

The Turtle Shack has various good nights throughout the week - Tuesday is 60’s night, Thursday is Legends night and Saturday is the big one. Friday night is the best beach party.

Bar Calema to the western side of town has a happy hour 6.30pm – 8.30pm where you can get 2 caipirinas for the price of 1! Situated on the main street this is often the starting point for many a night out and is often where everyone heads to for an after party!

Jungle Bar has a cool underground vibe playing lots of reggae and full of dreadlocks!

Terrazea is above the Irish Connection estate agents on the main street. They have some good live music on an open roof top. Good prices, good music and a chilled out vibe.

Blue Bar is a trendy chill out bar. It can be expensive and is mainly used by ex-pats but they do good cocktails and occasional happy hour deals.

However, if you really are looking to offer yourself up as a sacrifice to the wind gods then head for Birimbao next to the Djadsal hotel 10 minutes walk or taxi out to the west of town. Also try Pirata’s on the west side of town - playing R&B and local music and popular with the locals.
